We’re providing innovative car park management solutions in Ipswich
Residents of Ipswich will already know just how lucky we are to have so many historical and culturally significant places of interest right on our doorstep. Places like Christchurch Mansion, Ipswich Museum, Chantry Park and the Regent Theatre and of course, the Ipswich Waterfront is no exception to the long list of great places to visit in Ipswich.
The Ipswich Waterfront is a unique area to the south of the town centre in Ipswich, which has undergone significant regeneration over recent years. 2020 saw a further addition to this continued regeneration with the opening of The Hold, a brand-new heritage centre for Suffolk. Shared by Suffolk Archives and the University of Suffolk, when fully completed the building will be home to the Ipswich branch of Suffolk Archives and will house the bulk of Suffolk’s nationally and internationally significant archive collections.
Earlier this year the team at IPSERV were asked to find an innovative car park management solution for The Hold & Suffolk Archives new visitor car park that was to be located on the east side of the building, which also runs parallel with the University of Suffolk’s staff and student car park. As the Contract and Mobilisation Manager for IPSERV, I was tasked with developing a solution for the new visitor car park that would not impact on the adjoining university car park.
Another part of my role and responsibilities here at IPSERV is to ensure and maintain clear and constant communication between IPSERV, our customers, and our customer’s contractors, and in no time at all the whole team at IPSERV had pulled together to create a proposal which would have minimal impact on the adjoining university parking facilities. The solution was well received by the client, and we were given the green light to proceed.

After receiving the go-ahead for the contract, we filed the required planning permissions and, once approved, set about organising project mobilisations. A project plan was drawn up and agreed by our expert team at IPSERV, enabling our highly skilled team to ensure the required mobilisations were put in place.
This project required the installation of a new ANPR Column with two highly spec’d ANPR Cameras, which link virtually to the adjoining ANPR cameras within the existing University of Suffolk staff and student car park, which we also manage. We also installed a solar-powered Pay & Display machine within the new car park.
Part of the challenge for this site was to ensure that the new car park was used by visitors to The Hold only. To resolve this complication, we installed a two-stage parking solution; providing a tablet device for the Welcome Desk in The Hold, on which visitors who have paid for a stay in The Hold car park, subsequently record their vehicle registration to validate their stay.
Signage also plays a big part in every installation we complete, and this mobilisation was no different with clear messaging crucial for good customer understanding. All our signage is approved by the British Parking Association and provides site-specific information, as well as Terms & Conditions for each individual site.

Once the required equipment had been installed, we arranged some real-time testing (with the help of the friendly staff at The Hold) to ensure that all the new equipment and software worked correctly, which it did… of course!
This was a fantastic project to work on and one that I’m proud to have been part of. We successfully delivered on our IPSERV promise to provide a solution for The Hold car park, incorporating innovative and easy-to-use technology.
